Bermudiana Series

Ba-Na-Na | SOLD | 21" x 42"
One of a series of three paintings produced for the Bermudiana show. I wanted to try and tackle the differing shades of green found on the Banana leaf, along with the vein structure which helps define its shape.

Blue House | SOLD | 24" x 30"
This is one of the paintings from the Bermudiana show. My wife Deanne quickly took possession of it. It is a painting of a house found behind the house of my youth. I was drawn to the geometric position of the vent, offset by my framing of the peak.

Buttery Roof | SOLD | 21" x 30"
This painting is another from the Bermudiana series. I have always been intrigued by the Buttery- a common sight on Bermuda buildings. It is constantly debated whether the structure is simply decoration, or if the peak actually helps cool the room beneath it.

Cobbs Hill | SOLD | 24" x 24"
From the Bermudiana series, this building appealed to me as I walked my usual morning route. The square proportions of the chimney influenced me to produce it on a square canvas. I enjoyed reproducing the light effect found in the shadows of the chimney.

Four Sisters | SOLD | 24" x 33"
Another painting from the Bermudiana series. This building is found along East Broadway as you enter into Hamilton. Each chimney was built by a different mason as can be seen by the different style of each one.

Harbour Road | SOLD | 28" x 36"
One painting in the Bermudiana series. This building can be found on Harbour Road as you head away from Hamilton. The chimney is a prominent feature on any Bermuda home. The Bermudiana series is full of them!

Hibiscus Cottage Roof | SOLD | 16" x 24"
Found in the Bermudiana series, this is a painting of my childhood home. I have always wanted to produce a tribute to my parents' house, and what it means to me. This is one of a series of three paintings.

Hibiscus Cottage Shutter | Not Available | 25" x 37"
This is another of the Bermudiana series, and is a painting of my parents' home. I have a special interest in the traditional Bermuda shutter, especially when coupled with the traditional hinges. I like the geometric arrangement of this composition.

Hisbiscus Cottage Window | Not Available | 28" x 36"
This painting is part of the Bermudiana series, and is also a painting of the house I grew up in. This window is the one we would look out of to see who was coming up the drive. I was particularly proud of the way I rendered the shutters.

Locust & Wild Honey | SOLD | 21" x 42"
Part of a series of three paintings in the Bermudiana series, it was one of my first forays into the depiction of familiar Bermuda plant life. The plant produces a sweet fruit, and the holes in the leaves look as though made by an insect rather than natural growth.

Pinnacle Hill Chimney | SOLD | 20" x 36"
This was part of the Bermudiana show, and is a painting of a brother-in-law's house. I was drawn to the design of the cornice of the roof, and how it contrasted with the sides of the chimney. This was featured on the March 2000 cover of RG magazine.

Round House | SOLD | 21" x 30"
This is a painting of a house in Tucker's Town. It is featured in the Bermudiana series. I was interested in the perspective of the wall, and the composition of window and chimney. The yellow shutters are atypical for Bermuda homes.

Sailing 1 | SOLD | 22" x 44"
One of a set of three paintings featured in the Bermudiana show. This was the central painting in the display. I used the idea of the square as a unit of composition. This central one used two while the other side paintings used one.

Sailing 2 | SOLD | 22" x 44"
One of a set of three paintings displayed at the Bermudiana show. This one was displayed on the left side of the group of three. The perspective was quite striking to me, and a number of sailors have refered to it as a "sailor's view" of their boat while sailing.

Sailing 3 | SOLD | 22" x 22"
One of a set of three paintings displayed at the Bermudiana show. This one was displayed on the right side of the group of three. Each of the three paintings have differing tones in the sky colours as well as the sails, to depict the changing angles of light.

Salt Kettle | SOLD | 31" x 31"
I am very pleased with the depiction of early morning colours in this painting. The chimney on this house has an imposing air due to its squat proportions. This is one of a number of chimneys in the Bermudiana series.

Stonington | SOLD | 16" x 18"
This is a painting of an old farm house that once resided on the property which is used by the Bermuda College as part of the Stonington campus. The house was demolished to make way for an access road. This painting was displayed in the Bermudiana show.

Travellers Palm | SOLD | 21" x 42"
This is one of a series of three paintings displayed in the Bermudiana show. This is a very simple composition in terms of line. It was the progression of colour in the leaf stalks that interested me in this part of the plant. I also like the woven appearance of the stalks.
